Generation Z, Gen Z, or Zoomers, as they have been popularly nicknamed, are the generation of people that were born from 1997 to 2012. Gen Z is the next generation after the Millennials, and the nickname "Zoomers" is a play on the term "Boomers," which references the Baby Boomer generation. In popular conversation, each generation is characterized by generalizations of supposed typical behavior amongst that generation, and Gen Z is no different. The noted differences in behaviors and lifestyle patterns of the different age demographics of the populous are ultimately rooted in the sociological circumstances of the times of those generations. Each generation faces its own unique challenges, which can reflect profound implications when diving into statistical analysis of the social and personal issues faced by each generation.
As of late 2022, Generation Z's oldest members are gaining more workforce experience, finishing college, beginning careers, and having children. At this point, the oldest Zoomers are 25 years old, and the youngest ten years old. Due to the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and various social issues both domestically and abroad, Generation Z is facing a future with a higher degree of uncertainty compared to other generations(1). These are unsettling topics to consider while thinking about one's future. Zoomers experience high levels of anxiety and depression, and, according to the American Association of Psychology, Gen Z is more likely to report mental health concerns(2). They are also the first generation to grow up in a society with widespread internet access and digital mobile technology such as tablets and smartphones. This separates Zoomers in a big way from previous generations and has led Gen Z to be referred to as "digital natives."
Many point to this technological abundance as being correlated with many of the problems facing Generation Z, such as isolation and depression. Ironically, it can also be a huge part of what allows them to succeed and help move our society forward. Gen Z is said to be typically more aware and concerned about social issues on average than older generations. This could be because they have been more exposed to more sources of information regarding social issues through the internet. Gen Z also chooses brands largely based on their social responsibility initiatives and social and environmental messaging and values. Additionally, Zoomers are the most racially and ethnically diverse generation and have been exposed to much more social diversity than any other generation. Surveys have also found that Gen Z is generally more accepting of other groups than previous generations. Zoomers are also on pace to become the most educated generation, as they are less likely to drop out of high school and more likely to pursue higher education than previous generations.
These attitudes towards social issues, combined with their more natural ability with digital technology and greater emphasis on education, allow Gen Z a unique opportunity to help shape the world as they see fit. As more Zoomers begin to advance in society and fill more roles within the workforce and in business, they can use these strengths to help move our civilization forward in a positive direction. The internet has allowed for a much broader public discourse and interconnectivity in the world, as well as opening up business opportunities to a greater number of people. By Gen Z combining their social awareness with their innate abilities with digital technology, they stand in a unique place to use this technology to develop more socially conscious business ventures. In addition, by having a greater understanding of diversity, Gen Z can create new marketing styles that appeal to all of these groups in new ways we have not seen before. All of these factors can allow Generation Z to make a huge impact on business and the world as a whole.
